Seminar on Optimization Applications in Disaster Management Held

As part of the March 1-7 Earthquake Week events, our faculty hosted a scientific gathering. The online seminar titled “Optimization Applications in Disaster Management” featured Prof. Dr. Sibel Salman, a faculty member at Koç University, as the guest speaker.

In her opening remarks, our Dean, Prof. Dr. Handan Ucun Özel, highlighted the reality of earthquakes in our country and emphasized the vital importance of efficient resource use and scientific decision-making mechanisms in disaster management.

In her presentation, Prof. Dr. Sibel Salman addressed disaster management as a cycle and explained how industrial engineering and operations research methods are used in the processes of risk reduction, preparedness, response, and recovery. She also shared concrete examples from critical projects carried out specifically for Istanbul, including strengthening transportation networks, planning the locations of emergency response centers, coordinating the transfer of injured individuals, and planning field hospitals.

Referring to the importance of decision support systems in making the most accurate decisions under the uncertainties of disaster situations, Salman also answered participants’ questions. At the end of the seminar, our Dean, Prof. Dr. Handan Ucun Özel, presented Prof. Dr. Sibel Salman with a certificate of appreciation for her valuable contributions.
